Greece to focus education in IHRA leadership to combat antisemitism

The International Holocaust Memorial Alliance (IHRA) has rotating leadership, and Greece will fill it next, i24 News reported Thursday, noting, just hours before the announcement, Wednesday night, that destroying Jewish monuments in Greece.

The appointment will take effect on 1 April.

On Wednesday, a mural commemorating the Jewish community of Thessaloniki was destroyed. About 50,000 Thessaloniki suspects died during the Holocaust.

On December 31, 2020, just as the new year entered, antisemitic graffiti was painted on the wall of the Yavanim synagogue in Trikala in central Greece.

The next day, the Holocaust memorial of the area was destroyed, for the second time in the previous two years.

And, earlier, in November, the publisher of a Greek newspaper was convicted in state court of corruption and hate speech for publishing an op-ed who named a thief as the leader of a local Jewish community.

The IHRA definition explains how “specific opinion” of faces can manifest directly in acts of astronomical or physical violence.

Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexandros Papaioannou said the leadership’s focus will be on education, given the recent active antisemitic actions.
