Dominic Cooke on The Messenger and Changing Film of Follies

As well as how he works on an intelligent romantic comedy set in London.

Le The Messenger now playing in select theaters, I spoke to the director recently Dominic Cooke about making the mahogany thrush. The film is based on the story of a true British businessman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch), which helped the CIA enter a Soviet nuclear program during the Cold War. Wynne and his Russian store, Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze), formed an unlikely partnership that helped dispel the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early 1960s. The Messenger also stars Rachel Brosnahan as a CIA agent and Buckley will stand as Cumberbatch’s wife (Sheila Wynne).

During the interview, Cooke talked about why he was on board with the title change from Iron bar to The Messenger, as he changed nothing after the world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, as he works on an intelligent romantic comedy based in London, and more. In addition, it provides a major update to its film adaptation of Stephen Stephen Sondheim Follies, including the people he wants to take with him from his stage version of the show.

Check out what he had to say in the player above and below just as we were talking The Messenger trailer.

  • Has he made any changes since playing at Sundance?

  • Why he loved showing the film at the Sundance Film Festival.

  • What were his thoughts when they changed the title from Iron bar to The Messenger?

  • When is he going to make another film?

  • What is the status of his film adaptation Follies?

  • How he also works on an intelligent romantic comedy set in London.

  • Is he going to take any of the people with whom he was working on stage of Follies to his film?

INCLUDING: Benedict Cumberbatch on ‘The Courier’, ‘Sherlock’, and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’
