Eddie Hearn, in his role as a boxing promoter, has seen many of the sports over the last three decades doing the thing live and in person. But he thinks Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez could end up going down as the best he’s ever seen.
Hearn and Canelo are expected to continue their work deal through 2021, after the head of Matchroom helped bring out WBA (Super), WBC and pre-midfield champion Callum Smith in the December.
Avni Yildirim is next on February 27 in a mandatory title defense, and if the camp comes out victorious and without a scratch, Smith’s Matchroom stabilizer Billy Joe Saunders looks set to end next week weekend Cinco de Mayo in unification surface.
Hearn teamed up with the Ak and Barak Show (on DAZN and Sirius XM Fight Nation) to discuss Canelo vs Yildirim, what the Turkish opponent needs to do to pull off unrest, and Alvarez’s likely legacy in the sport .
“I don’t know how Yildirim will affect Canelo,” Hearn said. “Billy Joe Saunders, if he confronts Alvarez, his legs are fast, moving around. For Yildirim, he can’t do that.
“He doesn’t have the ability to go in there and do what Lara and Breac and Mayweather did.
“The only thing he can do is try to fight with fire, and hopefully get lucky, very honestly. But the only way you can be lucky is if you draw one. out of the bag.
“I think this guy is probably unstable. I’ve been watching live boxing for 34 years and I’ve never seen a fighter like Canelo in the flesh. He’s just getting better and better. better. “
