New Zealand only needed 21.2 overs to run down 131 Bangladesh in total and win the first of their three international matches with eight wikis.

Bangladesh were sent off by the guests in just 41.5 yards after being put in a bat first. The highest score was 27 of 54 Mahmudullah balls.

In response, after Martin Guptill dropped 38 runs from 19 balls with three fours and four sixes at the top of the order, New Zealand made a trip to a guaranteed win with plenty of surplus to enter.

In addition to Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim scored 23 from 49 balls and Liton Das 19 out of 36 as the only other real note scores for Bangladesh.

New Zealand left-arm distance archer Trent Boult (4-27) hit at both ends of the innings, removing Tamim (13) and Soumya Sarkar (0) within three balls in fifth place. . He returned to catch the last two wickets to fall.

Jimmy Neesham eliminated Das and Mushfiqur, then had a hand (literally) in eliminating Mohammad Mithun, by removing Mahmudullah’s direct driver on the stumps at the head of those who did not strike after Mithun left his land.

Mahedi Hasan, for the first time, hit six for his first run in ODIs and looked determined to raise the scoring level but fell to left – arm spinner Mitchell Santner for 14.

Thanks to Guptill, 50 New Zealand came without a wicket down and in just five goals, and the guests reached their 100 in the 16th over.

Henry Nicholls scored 49 unbeaten goals in his 50th ODI to see the Black Caps to victory in the 22nd, coming together in a 65-run partnership for the second wicket with Devon Conway (27).

The two teams will meet again for the second ODI in Christchurch on Tuesday.
