Android apps like Gmail are falling apart and ‘WebView’ may be to blame

This afternoon, a number of Android (self-enabled) users suddenly saw notifications appearing on their devices saying that apps had stopped running. Suddenly many of the bug-throwing apps cannot be opened, and they include important ones like Gmail, several banking apps, Google Pay and others.

There are reports of the problem on DownDetector, Reddit and Twitter, and Google Workplace Cloud Status Dashboard confirm that they are aware of problems with the Gmail app on Android. According to the status message, the issue will be updated before 8:05 PM ET.

If you are having this problem, going into the Google Play Store on your device and installing the latest update to a system app called “Android System WebView” is something that has worked for many people. “The app provides a browser similar to Chrome within apps, and according to developers and end users, many of the errors that people see appear to be the problem living there.

By uninstalling the updates my phone got calm and went back to normal, if we get any official information from Google about the problem I will update this post.
